The Tungkillo – Palmer – Sanderston planning area, located south-western corner of the LGA, consists of the following housing areas.

Tungkillo and Palmer are small, historic townships nestled in the picturesque landscapes of the Mount Lofty Ranges. Tungkillo, founded in 1861, is known for its scenic hills, rolling valleys, and iconic giant gum trees. Located just 60 km from Adelaide, the town is the starting point of the Lavender Federation Walking Trail and is home to the Soldiers Memorial Hall, a central gathering place for the local community. A short drive beyond Tungkillo lies Palmer, a township settled in 1860 and named after Colonel George Palmer. The area is known for its striking natural features, including unique granite outcrops and the well-known “Bear Rock,” a favourite among photographers and geology enthusiasts. Notably, the nearby Granite Boulders Area Geological Site is recognised as a State Heritage Place, highlighting the region’s geological significance.

Further east, Sanderston is a small settlement nestled at the foot of the Mount Lofty Ranges’ eastern slopes, offering expansive views of the surrounding countryside. Nearby, the communities of Milendella, Punthari, and Angas Valley reflect the area’s rural character, with strong ties to agriculture and local heritage. These quiet settlements, while small, contribute to the region’s rich tapestry of history, landscape, and community life.
